YONKERS – The City of Yonkers is seeking new firefighters.
Mayor Mike Spano, along with Fire Commissioner Robert Sweeney and members of the fire department, kicked off the hiring push today at the Yonkers Fire Recruitment Office, which is on the fourth floor of the Yonkers Riverfront Library, located at 1 Larkin Center.
“We invite men and women of Yonkers to join the rich tradition of our Fire Department – to join the over 400 firefighters who work each day to serve and protect our City and its residents,” Spano said, according to a press release. “Being a Yonkers Firefighter is a tough job, but is equally rewarding.”
Firefighter applications will be accepted until Jan. 10 at the fire recruitment office and at the Yonkers Civil Service Office, located at 1 Larkin Center on the second floor.
The fire examination will take place on Saturday, April 25.
The starting salary is $71,605. Candidates must be at least 17 years and 6 months old and have not reached their 29th birthday on the date of the written test, according to the city.
Additionally, applicants must be a legal Westchester County resident for at least three months immediately preceding the date of the written examination and have a valid New York State class D driver’s license. A high school diploma or equivalency to that is required.
Applicants must also pass a medical exam and background check investigation.
